Christianity is usually considered by non-Christians to be a static, unchanging collection of just-so stories and grasps for power by institutions. Formerly confined to dry academic theorizing and adorned with the bad writing typical to big ideas, queer theology is now a practicable and devotional approach. Father Shay was born in a female body and raised as a girl in an evangelical household, eventually coming to understand that his life would be enriched by assuming a male gender.
Over the past several years, a growing number of Christians have shifted their theology to affirm monogamous gay unions and gay marriage. The value of real experiences with real people. The Bible and sexuality.
Rarely do I ever hear an actual argument, certainly not from Scripture. What I do hear are experiences —how befriending an LGBT person or getting a certain feeling or receiving a supposed message from God should lead Christians to a new view of sex, marriage, and the human person—a view the church has unanimously rejected for two millennia. They may have been taught that sexual or romantic relationships that are not heterosexual are sinful…Yet those same LGBTQ people of faith know deep within that they were born this way.
Major denominations ordaining homosexuals, priests and clergy presiding over same-sex weddings, sanctuaries invaded by boisterous gay activists, debates over homosexuality ripping congregations apart-who would have guessed we would ever reach such a point in church history? A vigorous debate between Christians and homosexuals shouldn't be surprising in and of itself. If author and commentator Dr. Dennis Praeger is right when he says the Judeo-Christian ethic is responsible for the Western World's disapproval of homosexuality, then conflicts between the Church and the gay rights movement are not only understandable, they are inevitable.
Jump to navigation. A year ago the bishops of the Episcopal Church received a page report by eight theologians to provide the church with a "theology of same-sex relationships. As you might expect, the panel split into two parties, "traditionalist" and "liberal.
When I published this blog post two weeks ago, I was prepared for some people to applaud it, and for others to condemn it. That's what happens whenever you put an opinion out there. I was fully prepared for the waves of both support and hostility that accompany any vantage point on anything, especially a controversial topic like sexuality.
Kerby Anderson helps understand the complete biblical perspective on homosexuality. As Christians, Kerby helps us understand the biblical truth and how to apply it with compassion in our dealings with those around us. Does the Bible condemn homosexuality?
This theology -- which dehumanizes, ostracizes, and demonizes LGBT people -- does not happen in a vacuum. Just over a week ago, forty-nine members of the LGBT community, overwhelmingly Latinx, were slaughtered at a gay nightclub. These acts are extreme representations of what it looks like to take the words in the Quran to the letter of the law. Even those who are not radicalized in their Islamic beliefs perpetuate beliefs against the LGBT community that are harmful.
Queer theology is a theological method that has developed out of the philosophical approach of queer theorybuilt upon scholars such as Michel FoucaultGayle RubinEve Kosofsky Sedgwickand Judith Butler. Later the two would merge to become the more inclusive term of queer theology. The term queer can be understood within queer theory as encompassing one of three meanings: as an umbrella term, as transgressive action, and as erasing boundaries.
There is a darker side to LGBT theology, a side that goes far beyond seeking to legitimize same-sex relationships in the name of the Lord. Had these theologians and teachers and leaders said that Jesus can relate to every one of us, I would have offered a hearty Amen. Had they said that Jesus loved every one of us and shed His blood for our redemption, again I would have said Amen.
